What is Feline Panleucopenia Virus?
Feline Panleukopenia virus (FPV), also commonly referred to as feline distemper, is a highly contagious and life-threatening viral disease in cats.
What are the symptoms of Feline Panleucopenia Virus?
Symptoms of panleukopenia can include any of the following:
• fever
• lethargy
• loss of appetite
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
How do cats contract the infection?
The feline parvovirus (FPV) is the initiating cause for feline panleukopenia. Cats acquire this infection when they come into contact with infected blood, faeces, urine, or fleas that have been feeding from an infected cat. The virus can also be passed along by people who have not washed their hands appropriately between handling cats, or by materials such as bedding, food dishes or equipment that has been used on other cats.
Why do I need this Test?
Affected cats will require immediate live saving treatment. Early diagnosis is key, because if your cat is treated promptly and effectively and is able to make it through the first two days (48 hours), it is likely that your cat will recover fully. It may take a few weeks for your cat to feel completely back to normal, but once your cat has been exposed to this virus and has had an immune response to it, it will be immune from acquiring it again. Also, it will not pass the virus after the initial episode.
How do I perform the Test?
It is very simple – just use the enclosed cotton swab to obtain a faecal or vomit sample, mix it with the test solution and then add 3 drops to the test cassette. You will then be able to read the results after 5 minutes. A positive or negative result is indicated by 2 or only 1 line in the test window respectively.
The best time to test is during the shedding phase and/or when the symptoms appear. If tested outside this time period, you may get a false negative result.
What should I do if I get a positive result?
You must see your Vet immediately so that he/she can start treatment ASAP.
