What is the difference between the 12 parameter test and the standard 10 parameter test?
Both the 10 and the 12 parameter test strips will give you a good indication of your overall health. The 12 parameter test however will give a more in depth indication as to the health of your kidneys by checking for microalbumin and creatinine.
Why are microalbumin and creatinine important?
Microalbumin detects very small levels of a blood protein (albumin) in your urine. A microalbumin test is used to detect early signs of kidney damage in people who are at risk of developing kidney disease.
Creatinine is a chemical waste product produced by muscle metabolism. When your kidneys are functioning normally, they filter creatinine and other waste products out of your blood. These waste products are removed from your body through urination. A creatinine urine test measures the amount of creatinine in your urine.
When your kidneys are healthy, very little albumin is present in the urine and the microalbumin/creatinine ratio is low. The level of albumin in your urine may be higher than normal because of kidney disease. Common causes of kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune disorders.
A ratio of microalbumin (mg/dL) to creatinine (mg/L) of less than 30 is normal; a ratio of 30-300 signifies microalbuminuria and values above 300 are considered as macroalbuminuria. The instruction include a chart of how to check your Microalbumin to Creatinine Ratio.

The kidneys Your body has two kidneys one on each side of your abdomen, they are shaped like a bean. Each kidney is about the size of fist, the kidneys make urine, which then drains down the tubes (ureter’s) and into the bladder. The bladder then stores the urine until you pass it through the […]
