A decision by the MHRA (Medical Healthcare Regulatory Agency) to allow men over 18 to purchase Erectile Dysfunction treatment as an over the counter product without the need for a prescription was announced yesterday (28/11/17). This means Britain will be the first country to make this change.
The MHRA hope this move will stop men from purchasing unregulated drugs on the black market.
Viagra was launched in 1998 and due to the embarrassment men feel by the purchase of Viagra it quickly became a target for criminals. In 2016 alone £17 million worth of unlicensed Viagra was seized. Fake pills can be laden with toxic chemicals and cause various side effects with some people experiencing problems with their vision. It can also cause a huge drop in blood pressure.
The manufacturer Pfizer has now released onto the market a 4 or 8 tablet pack which can be ordered from Home Health UK priced from £21.98 and £38.98 including tracked delivery click here. A pharmacist will decide if treatment is appropriate and if the man should see their doctor. Men who suffer from severe cardiovascular disorders or are at a high risk and those who suffer with liver or kidney failure will still have to see their doctor.
The MHRA made the decision after a safety assessment and advice from the Commission on Human Medicines. The MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines, Mick Foy said “Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so its important men feel that they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side-effects.” he added “The decision is good news for men’s health”.
