What is World Health Day?

World Health Day is celebrated annually on April 7th to raise awareness about various health issues and promote healthy living. Organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), this day is dedicated to highlighting the focus of WHO each year to encourage governments, organisations, and individuals to take action.

World Health Day is also World Health Organisation Day, the same day the World Health Organisation was established in 1948. It was decided World Health Day would be held on this day as it would emphasise the work WHO has accomplished so far and promote the focus of WHO each year.

WHO is also responsible for hosting other global health days, such as World AIDS Day and World No Tobacco Day, to ensure everyone has access to information about how to stay healthy.

World Health Day 2024 Theme: My Health, My Right

The theme of World Health Day 2024 is My Health, My Right. This theme aims to highlight the right to health services and necessities for people all over the globe. Although over 140 countries recognise health as a human right, only 4 countries actually set out how to finance this.

In addition, with the numerous conflicts happening around the world, millions of people no longer have access to basic necessities such as:

  • Health services
  • Education
  • Safe drinking water
  • Food
  • Clean air
  • Quality housing

Furthermore, burning fossil fuels adds to climate change and pollutes the air we breathe. Over 5 million people die from air pollution caused by fossil fuels each year. These deaths can be prevented by educating people on the effects of burning fossil fuels and encouraging governments to change.

With the “My Health, My Rights” campaign, WHO aims to highlight the need to focus on creating a better environment that puts the health of everyone around the globe first. Let’s advocate for everyone, everywhere, this World Health Day!
